ChatGPT by lencx is an unofficial desktop application that wraps the ChatGPT web experience (https://chatgpt.com) inside a lightweight native window for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It adds a custom toolbar, a quick-ask input box, light/dark theming, an always-on-top pin, and smarter downloads — on top of the full ChatGPT website you already know.
This guide covers the 2.0 release, which is a complete rewrite built on the Tauri 2 framework. It is much smaller and leaner than the original 1.x series.
Note
This is a community project, not an official OpenAI product. It loads the real ChatGPT website in a native window — your account, conversations, and subscription all live with OpenAI exactly as they do in a browser. The app does not store or proxy your chats.
Important
OpenAI now ships official ChatGPT desktop apps, and the author has moved on to a successor project called Noi. This app still works, but it is no longer the focus of active feature development. If you want the older, feature-rich 1.x version, it lives on the
release-v1.1.0branch.
1. Quick Start
- Download the installer for your operating system from the GitHub Releases page.
- Install it the same way you install any desktop app (see Installation for per-OS details).
- Launch ChatGPT. A native window opens showing the ChatGPT website.
- Sign in with your OpenAI account, exactly as you would in a browser.
- Start chatting. Use the toolbar at the top of the window to navigate, switch themes, pin the window, or toggle the quick-ask box.
Tip
Everything the ChatGPT website can do, this app can do — because it is the ChatGPT website, running in a native frame. The app's job is to add convenience features around it (toolbar, themes, pin, quick-ask, downloads).
2. Installation
The recommended path is to download a prebuilt installer. Building from source is also supported and covered in the Admin Guide.
2.1 Download a prebuilt release
All installers are published on the Releases page. The bundler produces packages for every supported platform ("targets": "all").
macOS
- Download the
.dmgfile. - Open the
.dmgand drag ChatGPT into your Applications folder. - Launch it from Applications or Spotlight.
Windows
- Download the
.msi(or.exe) installer. - Run the installer and follow the prompts.
- Launch ChatGPT from the Start menu.
Linux
- Download the
.AppImage,.deb, or.rpmpackage for your distribution. - Install the package (for example,
sudo dpkg -i chatgpt_*.deb) or mark the AppImage executable and run it. - Launch ChatGPT from your application menu.
Warning
Because this is an unsigned community build, your operating system may warn that the app is from an unidentified developer. On macOS you may need to right-click the app and choose Open the first time, or allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security. On Windows, SmartScreen may ask you to confirm More info → Run anyway.
2.2 Verify the install
After launching, confirm the app is healthy:
- [ ] A native window titled ChatGPT opens.
- [ ] The ChatGPT website loads inside the window.
- [ ] A thin custom toolbar is visible at the top (or bottom, depending on platform).
- [ ] You can sign in to your OpenAI account.
3. The Window at a Glance
The app shows the ChatGPT website in the main area, framed by a slim custom toolbar. The toolbar is where all of the app's added features live.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Note
On macOS the toolbar sits at the top of the window and integrates with the native traffic-light buttons. On Windows and Linux the toolbar is positioned at the bottom of the window. The controls are identical either way.
The toolbar is divided into two groups:
| Group | Controls |
|---|---|
| Left | Current site address, Back, Forward, Reload, Ask toggle |
| Right | Theme switch, Pin (always-on-top), Settings |
4. Everyday Usage
4.1 Navigating ChatGPT
The toolbar gives you browser-style navigation over the embedded ChatGPT site.
| Control | Icon | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Back | ◀ | Go to the previous page in history |
| Forward | ▶ | Go forward again |
| Reload | ⟳ | Reload the current ChatGPT page |
| Address chip | 🔗 + hostname | Shows the hostname of the page you're on |
The address chip displays the hostname of the current page (for example, chatgpt.com). Clicking it opens the full current URL in your default system browser — handy when you want to continue something in a regular browser tab.
Tip
Use Reload (⟳) as your first move whenever the page looks stuck, a response stalls, or the interface stops responding. It reloads only the embedded page, not the whole app.
4.2 Signing in
Sign in exactly as you would on the website: the app loads chatgpt.com, so OpenAI's normal login flow appears inside the window. Your session is stored by the embedded web view just like a browser session.
Note
Links inside ChatGPT that would normally open a new tab are redirected to open in your default browser instead of spawning extra app windows. This keeps the desktop app focused on a single chat session.
4.3 Downloading files
When ChatGPT offers a file for download (for example, an exported file or an image), the app:
- Saves the file to your operating system's Downloads folder.
- Automatically opens the file with its default application once the download finishes.
You don't need to choose a location — downloads always go to your standard Downloads directory.
Tip
If you can't find a file you just downloaded, look in your system Downloads folder. The app does not prompt for a save location.
5. Quick Ask
Quick Ask adds a dedicated message box to the window so you can type and send a prompt to ChatGPT without scrolling to the site's own input field. It's useful when the page is long or when you want a fixed, always-visible place to type.
5.1 Turning Quick Ask on and off
Click the Ask button (💬) in the left group of the toolbar. The button highlights when Quick Ask is active, and an input box appears along the edge of the window. Click it again to hide the box.
Your Quick Ask preference is remembered — if you leave it on, it will be on again the next time you open the app.
5.2 Sending a message
- Type your prompt into the "Type your message here..." box.
- Press the send shortcut, or click the send arrow (➤):
| Platform | Send shortcut |
|---|---|
| macOS | ⌘ + Enter (Command + Return) |
| Windows / Linux | Ctrl + Enter |
The text you type is mirrored into ChatGPT's own input field as you type, and sending it submits the prompt to ChatGPT just as if you had typed it on the page. After sending, the Quick Ask box clears and is ready for your next message.
Note
Quick Ask drives ChatGPT's normal message box behind the scenes — it finds the page's input field, fills it with your text, and clicks send. It works with whatever conversation is currently open in the main view.
Warning
Quick Ask sends to the conversation currently loaded in the main window. Make sure the chat you want is open before you send, especially if you've navigated away.
6. Appearance and Window Behavior
6.1 Switching themes
Click the theme icon on the right side of the toolbar to cycle through three modes:
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| System | Follows your operating system's light/dark setting |
| Light | Always light |
| Dark | Always dark |
Each click advances to the next mode in the order System → Light → Dark → System. Your choice is saved.
Important
Changing the theme restarts the app so the new theme can be applied cleanly to the native window. This is expected — the window will briefly close and reopen, and your ChatGPT session is preserved.
6.2 Pin (always on top)
Click the pin icon (📌) to keep the ChatGPT window always on top of other windows. Click it again to unpin. This is handy when you want ChatGPT visible alongside another app while you work. The pin state is remembered between launches.
6.3 Window controls
Standard minimize, maximize/restore, and close controls are available for the window. On macOS these are the native traffic-light buttons; on Windows and Linux the app provides its own minimize, maximize, and close buttons.
Note
On macOS, the custom toolbar can be hidden by default and revealed on hover, giving a cleaner, more native look that blends with the system title bar.
6.4 Settings
The Settings button (⚙) opens a separate settings window.
Note
In the 2.0 release, the settings window is an early placeholder and does not yet expose configurable options through its interface. App preferences (theme, pin, and Quick Ask) are controlled directly from the toolbar and are saved automatically. Advanced users can edit the underlying configuration file — see the Admin Guide for its location and format.
7. Keyboard Shortcuts
| Shortcut | Action | Context |
|---|---|---|
⌘ + Enter (macOS) |
Send the Quick Ask message | Quick Ask box focused |
Ctrl + Enter (Windows/Linux) |
Send the Quick Ask message | Quick Ask box focused |
Note
Beyond the Quick Ask send shortcut, keyboard behavior inside the chat area is provided by the ChatGPT website itself, not by this app.
8. Troubleshooting
Each entry below maps to real, observed behavior or community-reported issues. The format is Symptom → Cause → Solution → Prevention.
Symptom: Your session has expired
- Cause: The embedded web session timed out, the same way a browser session would, or your login cookie was invalidated by OpenAI.
- Solution: Reload the page with the ⟳ button, then sign in again. If that fails, restart the app.
- Prevention: Keep the app updated and sign in fresh after long periods of inactivity.
Symptom: Can't log in (especially on macOS)
- Cause: The login flow runs inside the embedded web view; OS-level web view restrictions or a partially loaded login page can interrupt it.
- Solution: Reload (⟳) and retry. If the login popup misbehaves, click the address chip to open the current URL in your normal browser, sign in there, then return to the app and reload.
- Prevention: Make sure you're on the latest release and that your system web view component is up to date.
Symptom: Clicking a link opens it in my browser instead of the app
- Cause: This is intentional. The app redirects in-page links that would open a new tab to your default system browser, to avoid spawning extra windows.
- Solution: No action needed — continue in the browser tab that opened, or copy the link back into ChatGPT if you prefer.
- Prevention: N/A — this is by design.
Symptom: A downloaded file "disappeared"
- Cause: Downloads are always saved to your system Downloads folder and opened automatically; there is no save-location prompt.
- Solution: Open your Downloads folder to find the file. It may also already be open in its default application.
- Prevention: Check your Downloads folder first whenever a file seems missing.
Symptom: Theme change closed the window
- Cause: Switching the theme restarts the app so the new theme applies to the native window.
- Solution: Wait a moment — the window reopens automatically with your session intact.
- Prevention: N/A — this is expected behavior.
Symptom: The page is blank, stuck, or unresponsive
- Cause: A transient web view or network hiccup, or ChatGPT itself returning an error.
- Solution: Click Reload (⟳). If that doesn't help, quit and relaunch the app.
- Prevention: Ensure you have a working internet connection; the app needs to reach
chatgpt.com.
Symptom: Zoom shortcuts (Ctrl + / Ctrl - / Ctrl 0) don't resize the page
- Cause: Page-zoom keyboard shortcuts are not wired up as global app shortcuts in this release.
- Solution: Use ChatGPT's own interface controls, or your operating system's accessibility zoom, to adjust text size.
- Prevention: N/A — track the project's issue tracker for future zoom support.
Tip
For anything that looks like a ChatGPT website problem (a model error, a rendering glitch in a reply, a feature missing from your account), test it in a normal browser at
chatgpt.com. If it happens there too, it's an OpenAI/website issue, not an app issue.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this the official ChatGPT app from OpenAI? No. It's an independent, open-source project by lencx. It loads the official ChatGPT website inside a native window. OpenAI now also offers official desktop apps.
Q: Do I need an API key or to pay the developer? No API key and no payment to the developer. You sign in with your normal OpenAI account, and your plan (free or paid) is whatever you have with OpenAI.
Q: Are my conversations stored by this app? No. Your chats live in your OpenAI account, just as they do in a browser. The app is a window onto the website.
Q: Which platforms are supported? macOS, Windows, and Linux. Installers for all three are published on the Releases page.
Q: How is this different from just using a browser? It adds a dedicated app window with a custom toolbar (navigation, theme switch, always-on-top pin), a Quick Ask input box, and automatic downloads to your Downloads folder.
Q: What does the "Ask" button do?
It toggles the Quick Ask box — a fixed input field where you can type a prompt and send it with ⌘/Ctrl + Enter, without scrolling to ChatGPT's own input.
Q: Why does the app restart when I change the theme? Changing the theme restarts the app so the new theme applies cleanly to the native window. Your session is preserved.
Q: Where do my downloads go? To your operating system's standard Downloads folder. They also open automatically when finished.
Q: Can I configure settings in the Settings window? Not in this release — the Settings window is a placeholder. Theme, pin, and Quick Ask are controlled from the toolbar and saved automatically. See the Admin Guide for editing the configuration file directly.
Q: I liked the older, more feature-packed version. Where is it?
The previous 1.x release is preserved on the release-v1.1.0 branch. The author's newer project is Noi.
Q: How do I build it myself? See the Admin Guide, which covers prerequisites (Rust, Node.js, pnpm), the dev server, and producing release bundles.
Q: Is it safe? It needs broad permissions. The app runs the official ChatGPT site and requests the desktop capabilities it needs to manage windows, web views, downloads, and opening links. The full permission set is documented in the Admin Guide for the security-conscious.
